To fulfill my philosophy and accomplish the goals I have for each student, I have chosen a variety of teaching methods for my studio.

Private Instruction

Whether students are enrolled in 30 or 45 minute private lessons, I always strive to maximize lesson time.  I often use method books in the first 3-4 years of lessons, supplementing with various other books to ensure that the students are exposed to a variety of music styles and notation formats.  Students who have completed the method books are then placed in various anthologies, giving exposure to all 4 time periods and a variety of composers and styles.  Every student is given various assignemtns in theory, technique, history, ear training, etc.

All private students also participate in periodic group lessons.  These lessons allow a more time to focus in on ear training, theory, and musicianship.  Group lessons provide a comaradarie amongst piano students and give increased motivation for practice.  Group games are often the student's favorite part of group lessons and remind studnets that learning can be fun!

Partner Lessons

When 2 students of similar age and ability come to my studio, there may be opportunity for a partner lesson in which the 2 students attend a lesson together.  Not only is this cheaper for the parents, but the increased motivation, improved listening skills, music learning games, etc. are a great asset to students in their musical development.

Performance Classes

Performance classes occur approximately 4 times a year and provide students the opportunity to perform polished pieces in front of their peers.  Their audience (or peers) are then given listening worksheets which they must fill out to evaluate each performance.  This activity sharpens their listening skills and teaches students what to listen for in music.  The performer is given the opportunity to practice their performance and learns how to cope with anxiety, mistakes, and performance etiquette.

Group Lessons

Group lessons are offered when their is a group (3 or more) students of similar age and ability.  Group lessons provide more opportunities for learning games, ensemble work, and fun while learning, resulting in increased motivation and long term commitment to lessons.
